William Henry Harrison: Young Tippecanoe
Published in Digital by Patria Press ()
Authors: Howard Peckham and Cathy Morrison
Average review score:

A Great Read
William Henry Harrison, second book in the Young Patriots Series, doesn't disappoint, but makes an excellent read, and both entertains and educates. The illustratins are simply wonderful and truly enhance the story. Geared to the 8 to 12 year old, it's a must on every family bookshelf!

A welcome, highly recommended biography for kids.
William Henry Harrison holds the distinction of being the United States President who delivered the longest inaugural address and served the shortest time (30 days) before he also became the first president to die in office. William Henry Harrison: Young Tippecanoe is a superb biography for young readers ages 8 to 12, written by the late Howard Peckham, and originally published in 1951. Featuring the childhood adventures of our ninth president (including the thrilling rescue of his sister from drowning when he was only seven, and the courageous capture of a British soldier just one year later when he was eight, William Henry Harrison is a welcome, very highly recommended addition to school and community biography collections for children and part of the Patria Press newly designed "Young Patriots" series.

The World Is a Ghetto: Race and Democracy Since WWII
Published in Hardcover by Basic Books (05 June, 2001)
Author: Howard Winant
Average review score:

The hard questions about race
This book is for anyone bothered by the hard questions about race: Why is race both invisible and so evident in the large and small details of our lives? How did racism become, in only several recent decades, morally and culturally repugnant, but at the same time we seem unable to deal with or recognize its obvious effects? How have we come to entrust leaders with the decision whether equality has gone "too far" who opposed it from it's beginnings (such as the current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who opposed the Brown v. Board of Education decision integrating the schools)? Why do we look at racial issues and history so provincially, rather than taking a much more revealing global focus?

Winant explains all this and more. It's a must read for anyone who cares about race, equality or democracy.

Making sense of the race scene--taking a chance
I bought this book because I was having trouble with the current race scene in the U.S. Too many black people locked up, too much racial inequality, too many cops killing blacks. Winant puts racism in a historical and international context I had not thought of before. This book shows why the world is in a new stage of racial (and racist) history now, both in America and elsewhere. Destined to be a classic!

The best Yo-Yo book by far

A study guide for all!
Being a History major at Ursinus College where author S. Ross Doughty is a professor, I can assure any prospective buyer that this study guide is a comprehensive guide to the Spodek edition of The World's History. With this study guide, Doughty is assured to be an instructor to more students than just the ones he enlightens in his History classes. If you have Spodek, you need Doughty!

A Unique view of World History.
Spodek's World History is one of the first comprehensive world history texts composed by a single author in a non-european centric perspective. I highly reccomend this text book.

15 days in '56 : the first Australian Olympics
Published in Unknown Binding by Angus & Robertson ()
Author: Bruce Howard
Average review score:

Another era
This is a fascinating book about the greatest show on Earth, in another era. In Melbourne, people could queue up on the day of the event and buy tickets to even the most popular events.

The Melbourne games were dubbed the 'Friendly games' - the first post WW2 games where political issues were not to the fore (although there was a very bloody waterpolo match between the USSR and newly-invaded Hungary)

The book focuses on Australian Olympians who are now part of the legendary 'Golden Era' - runners like Shirley Strickland, Betty Cuthbert, John Landy, Ron Clarke (who as a 19 year old lit the flame - that story is retold from Clark's perspective, and is enthralling), swimmers Dawn Fraser, Murray Rose and so many more.

Another fascinating story is that of Russian Vladimir Kuts and his great rival Czech Emil Zatopek.

It is generously illustrated with black and white photos. Each chapter is an essay on an aspect of the games and is followed by numerous pages of photos, each of which tells a fascinating story itself.

You don't have to be an Olympics fiend to find interest in this book, but for those who are, it's terrific!

25 Bicycle Tours in Maine: Coastal and Inland Rides from Kittery to Caribou
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (May, 1990)
Author: Howard Stone
Average review score:

Another excellent book from Howard Stone
I have enjoyed Howard Stone's bike books for Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and as a new resident of Maine am delighted to have an opportunity to enjoy his rides in my new state. As always, Howard's ride descriptions and directions are very thorough and accurate. I especially appreciate the consistency with which he rates the difficulty of the rides. As an avid, but strictly recreational, cyclist, I found this to be an excellent book.
